He attended Boston University School of Medicine, where he was a member of AOA and graduated MD with distinction in 1995. He served as a General Surgery Intern and Resident at UCLA from 1995 to 2003, during which he also worked in the research lab and obtained his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in 2001. He trained in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at Stanford University from 2003 to 2006, after which he joined as faculty. Currently, he is Associate Professor, Program Director, and Director of Aortic Surgery at Stanford. The recipient of multiple teaching and research awards, Mike has led clinical and basic research efforts in transplantation, aortic disease and surgery (including connective tissue disorders), bicuspid aortic valve disease, coronary artery disease, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He is the recipient of grant funding from the AHA and the NIH, including RO1 grants from 2016-2026 for the study of Marfan Syndrome and aortic disease. Mike has served at the leadership levels of the STS and AATS. At the AHA, he was Chair of the Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia Council. The Western Thoracic Surgical Association The Western Thoracic Surgical Association (WTSA) was founded in 1974. It was originally named the Samson Thoracic Surgical Association in honor of Paul "Buck" Samson, a Pioneer in Thoracic Surgery on the west coast with his surgical base in Oakland, California.
